Chronic venous disease is one of the most common conditions a vascular surgeon sees, yet many people live with it for years before being assessed. In the Edinburgh Vein Study, a large population survey of UK adults, visible varicose veins were found in roughly a third of the working-age population, and milder chronic venous changes in around 8 in 10 when examined carefully. Aching, heaviness, swelling, night cramps, itching and skin discolouration around the ankle are the everyday signs, not only the appearance of the veins.
About one in three adults has visible varicose veins, and the underlying cause, venous reflux, where the one-way valves in the leg veins leak and blood pools, is what drives the symptoms and the long-term skin damage. That is why a duplex ultrasound scan, which maps exactly which veins are leaking, matters more than how the leg looks from the outside. We are at 46–48 Wood Street, Kingston upon Thames, KT1 1UW, a few minutes’ walk from the Bentall Centre and the Kingston one-way system. The Rose Theatre and Kingston station (South Western Railway, direct to London Waterloo) are both close by, and the Cromwell Road bus station serves routes from Surbiton, New Malden, Norbiton and Ham. Your history, examination, duplex ultrasound and, where appropriate, your procedure are carried out by a consultant on the GMC Specialist Register for Vascular Surgery. First-visit duplex ultrasound is available where clinically indicated, with day-case treatment under local anaesthetic. You leave with a written plan the same day. Initial consultation with duplex ultrasound is £365 (one leg) or £520 (both legs) on a self-pay basis, and no GP referral is required.

Yes, in most straightforward cases. Duplex ultrasound is carried out at the first appointment, so most patients are examined, scanned and given a written treatment plan on the same visit in most cases. Where deep venous or arterial disease is suspected, a dedicated scan may still be needed and will be arranged.
