What it checks

Find what your immune system reacts to

An allergy blood test measures specific IgE, the antibody your body makes towards a particular allergen. It is a good option when a skin-prick test is not suitable, for example if you have eczema, take antihistamines, or have had a strong reaction before. You can test a single suspected trigger or screen broadly. These are the allergen groups most often checked:

Grass & tree pollens House dust mite Pet & animal dander Moulds Foods nuts, milk, egg, wheat, shellfish Latex Insect venom bee, wasp
Understanding your result

Sensitisation is not the same as an allergy

This is the most important thing to understand about allergy blood tests, and the reason a doctor reviews every result. A positive specific IgE means you are sensitised, your immune system recognises that allergen. It does not by itself confirm that the allergen causes your symptoms, and a negative result does not always rule an allergy out. The value of the test is in a clinician reading it alongside your history, deciding what is relevant, and agreeing what to do next.

How the doctor uses your result

The doctor matches your IgE results to the symptoms you actually experience, separates a meaningful trigger from a harmless sensitisation, and advises on avoidance, an action plan, or referral to an allergy specialist where appropriate. You get clarity and a plan, not just a list of numbers.

Screen broadly, or target a single trigger

Widest screen

ALEX Allergy Explorer

A single blood test that measures specific IgE to a wide range of allergens and allergen components at once. Ideal when symptoms have several possible triggers, or when triggers are unclear and you would rather screen broadly than one allergen at a time. Read more about the ALEX Allergy Explorer.

Individual Allergen Test

£69 £108 all-in

Specific IgE to one chosen allergen, when you already have a clear suspected trigger such as a particular pollen, food or animal.

Total IgE Test

£99 £138 all-in

Measures your overall IgE level, which can support the picture in conditions such as eczema or asthma and help the doctor interpret allergy symptoms.

An Immunoglobulins test (IgA, IgG, IgM) is also available at £129 (£168 all-in). This assesses overall immune function rather than allergy. One £39 administration fee covers your whole visit, however many tests you book, charged once per visit and never per test.

Blood test or skin-prick

Why a blood test, and when it suits you

A skin-prick test and a blood test look at the same thing, an IgE response, in different ways. A blood test does not depend on a skin reaction, so it is the better choice when skin testing is not suitable: if you have a skin condition such as eczema or dermatographism, if you take antihistamines or other medicines that blunt skin testing, if a skin test would be hard to do, or if you have had a severe reaction before and prefer a sample taken from the arm. The doctor will tell you which approach fits your situation, and can refer you for skin testing or specialist allergy assessment if that is the better route.

When to consider a test

Symptoms worth investigating

Consider an allergy blood test if you have recurring sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy or watering eyes, hives or itching, or symptoms after eating that you cannot pin to a clear trigger. It is also useful if you have eczema, asthma or sinus problems that may be linked to allergens, or if a skin-prick test is not suitable for you.

A severe reaction is an emergency, not a test

If you have signs of anaphylaxis, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, mouth or throat, a widespread rash with feeling faint, or a sudden severe reaction, this needs immediate help. Use an adrenaline auto-injector if you have one and call 999, or go to the nearest A&E. Do not wait for a blood test. An allergy blood test is for planned investigation, not for an active or recent severe reaction.

Working alongside the NHS

How KONCEPT® complements your NHS care

The NHS provides comprehensive allergy care, through your GP and, for complex or severe cases, specialist allergy clinics, and that pathway remains the right route for many people, particularly anyone who has had a severe reaction. KONCEPT® is designed to complement, not replace, that care. It makes specific IgE and the ALEX Allergy Explorer easy to access directly, without referral, with a doctor to interpret the result against your history. With your written consent we share a clinical summary with your NHS GP so your care stays joined up, and we refer on to specialist allergy services where that is the right next step.

Source: allergy testing guidance reflects the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology and NHS allergy guidance. NHS provision varies by region and clinical context, and the NHS pathway remains appropriate for many patients.

Frequently asked

Questions our patients ask about allergy testing

What does an allergy blood test measure?

An allergy blood test measures specific IgE, the antibody your immune system makes towards a particular allergen. A higher level means your body is sensitised to that allergen. We offer a single allergen test for a chosen trigger, a Total IgE test for an overall picture, and the ALEX Allergy Explorer, which checks a wide range of allergens in one sample. Every result is reviewed by a GMC-registered doctor who explains it against your symptoms.

Does a positive result mean I am allergic?

Not on its own. A positive specific IgE shows sensitisation, meaning your immune system recognises that allergen, but sensitisation is not the same as a clinical allergy. Whether an allergen actually causes your symptoms is judged by a doctor alongside your history. Equally, a negative result does not always rule an allergy out. This is exactly why the result is interpreted by a clinician rather than read as a simple yes or no.

Is a blood test the same as a skin-prick test?

They test the same thing in different ways. A skin-prick test looks at a reaction on the skin, while a blood test measures specific IgE in a blood sample. A blood test is useful when skin testing is not suitable, for example if you have a skin condition such as eczema, take antihistamines or other medicines that affect skin testing, or have had a severe reaction before. The doctor can advise which approach fits your situation.

What allergens can you test for?

Common testable allergens include grass and tree pollens, house dust mite, pet and animal dander, moulds, foods such as nuts, milk, egg, wheat and shellfish, latex, and insect venom such as bee and wasp. You can test a single suspected trigger, or use the ALEX Allergy Explorer to screen a wide range at once. The doctor helps choose based on your symptoms and history.

What is the ALEX Allergy Explorer?

The ALEX Allergy Explorer is a single blood test that measures specific IgE to a wide range of allergens and allergen components at once. It is useful when symptoms have several possible triggers, when triggers are unclear, or when you would rather screen broadly than test one allergen at a time. As with any IgE test, the results show sensitisation and are interpreted by a doctor against your history.

Do you test for food intolerance?

No. We offer IgE-based allergy testing, which looks at true allergic sensitisation. We do not offer IgG food-intolerance tests, because they are not supported by current evidence and are not recommended by UK allergy specialists for diagnosing food intolerance. If you have symptoms after eating, a doctor can advise on a sensible, evidence-based way to investigate them.

How quickly do I get my results?

Most results are returned within 2 to 5 working days, depending on the allergens tested. The outcome note is sent to your email, password-protected. The ALEX Allergy Explorer can take a little longer, and you will be told the expected time when you book.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book online, in person at the clinic, or add the test during a GP consultation at KONCEPT®. A GMC-registered doctor reviews each request for clinical suitability and helps choose the right test before your appointment is confirmed.

How much does an allergy blood test cost?

An Individual Allergen Test is 69 pounds, a Total IgE Test is 99 pounds, and the ALEX Allergy Explorer is 379 pounds. A single 39 pound administration fee covers your whole visit, charged once per visit and never per test. The all-in prices are therefore 108 pounds, 138 pounds and 418 pounds. If a GP review is recommended afterwards, that is a separate booking: your NHS GP at no NHS charge, or a KONCEPT GP consultation at 149 pounds.

Is allergy testing available on the NHS, and how does KONCEPT complement it?

Allergy testing is available on the NHS when clinically indicated, usually through a GP and, for complex cases, an allergy clinic, and the NHS pathway remains the right route for many people. KONCEPT® complements that by offering specific IgE and the ALEX Allergy Explorer directly, without referral, with a doctor to interpret the result against your history. With your written consent we share a clinical summary with your NHS GP so the result is added to your NHS record.

Do you share my results with my NHS GP?

Only with your written consent. We can send a clinical summary to your NHS GP so your result is added to your NHS record and your ongoing care stays joined up.

Where is the clinic?

46 to 48 Wood Street, Kingston upon Thames, KT1 1UW. KONCEPT® Medical Clinic is opposite Kingston station, with parking nearby at the Bentall Centre.
