Sexually transmitted infections are far more common than most people realise, and many cause no symptoms at all, which is exactly why regular testing matters. The most recent national figures from the UK Health Security Agency, for England in 2024, show the scale.
Source: UK Health Security Agency, Sexually transmitted infections and screening for chlamydia in England, 2024 data (published June 2025). Figures are for England.
The right STI test depends on what you want covered and whether you have symptoms. Some infections are detected from a blood sample, others from a urine sample or a swab, so a full screen combines both. If you are not sure which to choose, a GMC-registered doctor reviews every request and can guide you. Most people fall into one of these situations:
HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and hepatitis C are found from a blood sample. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea, the two most common STIs, are not blood-borne and need a urine sample or swab. The screening packages below combine both kinds of sample so the common infections are covered together. If you only want the blood-borne infections, the standalone STI Blood Screen covers those; if you only want chlamydia and gonorrhoea, the standalone chlamydia and gonorrhoea test covers those.
Different infections need different samples. Some are found in blood, others in a urine sample or a swab, and a couple are diagnosed by examination. This table shows the common STIs, how each is tested, and which KONCEPT® option covers it, so you can match a test to your situation.
| Infection | How it is tested | Covered at KONCEPT® by |
|---|---|---|
| Chlamydia | Urine sample or swab (not blood-borne) | All screening packages, or the standalone Chlamydia & Gonorrhoea test |
| Gonorrhoea | Urine sample or swab; throat and rectal swabs in the multi-site screen | All screening packages, or the standalone Chlamydia & Gonorrhoea test |
| HIV | Blood | The STI Blood Screen and every screening package |
| Syphilis | Blood | The STI Blood Screen and every screening package |
| Hepatitis B | Blood | The STI Blood Screen, plus the Plus, Advanced and Comprehensive screens |
| Hepatitis C | Blood | The STI Blood Screen, plus the Plus, Advanced and Comprehensive screens |
| Trichomonas | Urine sample or swab | The Plus, Advanced and Comprehensive screens |
| Mycoplasma genitalium | Urine sample or swab | The Plus, Advanced and Comprehensive screens |
| Genital herpes (HSV) | Swab taken from a sore or blister, so it is tested when symptoms are present | Available on request when there are symptoms; the doctor advises at booking |
| Genital warts / HPV | Warts are diagnosed by examination; high-risk HPV is checked from a cervical or vaginal sample | High-risk HPV via the Cervical Smear & HPV screen for women; warts assessed in a GP appointment |
This is why a full screen combines a blood sample with a urine sample or swab. If you are unsure what you need, a GMC-registered doctor reviews every request and can advise.
The screening packages test the same infections for everyone. What differs is the sample route, and for women the option of cervical screening alongside an STI screen.
Each result is interpreted against the appropriate reference range, and a GMC-registered doctor advises on the right combination of samples for you.
Each package is an all-in price that already includes the £39 administration fee and the doctor review. Choose by how wide a screen you want; the Core screen covers the four most common concerns, and each tier above adds further infections and sample sites.
A GMC-registered doctor reviews each request for clinical appropriateness and advises on timing. Blood tests have a window period after exposure, so the doctor checks your timing and advises whether a repeat test is needed to be sure.
However you book, a GMC-registered doctor reviews every result. Choose the level of support that suits you, the same options offered with our other blood test packages.
The test, with a doctor reviewing your request beforehand and your result afterwards, and a confidential outcome note saying either no action is needed or a follow-up is recommended. Plus the single £39 administration fee per visit.

A blood-only screen for the four blood-borne infections: HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. It does not cover chlamydia or gonorrhoea, which need a swab or urine test. See the STI Blood Screen below ›
A focused test for the two most common STIs, from a urine sample or a swab. The right choice if these are your only concern. See the chlamydia & gonorrhoea test ›
A smear with high-risk HPV testing, the screen that checks for the cell changes linked to cervical cancer. This is a clinical procedure, booked through our women's health service. See the cervical screening service ›
For symptoms such as discharge, irritation or pain when passing urine, our women's health service investigates and treats UTIs and vaginal infections such as thrush and bacterial vaginosis. See UTI & vaginal infections ›
If you may have been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) can reduce the risk of infection but is time-critical. Do not wait for a test. Contact an NHS sexual health (GUM) clinic or A&E urgently. STI testing here is for screening, not emergency post-exposure care.
A blood-only screen for the four sexually transmitted infections found in blood: HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. It does not cover chlamydia or gonorrhoea, which are not blood-borne and need a urine sample or swab, covered in the screening packages above or the standalone chlamydia and gonorrhoea test.
A fourth-generation HIV test detecting both HIV-1 and HIV-2. Early HIV often has no symptoms, so testing is the only way to know. A reactive result is always confirmed before any diagnosis is given.
Syphilis is rising in the UK and can be silent in its early stages. It is straightforward to treat when found early, which is why screening matters even without symptoms.
A blood-borne virus that affects the liver and can be sexually transmitted. Identifying it allows monitoring, treatment and protection of partners through vaccination.
Often symptomless for years and very treatable when caught early. Detecting it early means it can be managed before it affects the liver.
Each result is reviewed by a GMC-registered doctor. Blood tests have a window period after exposure, so the doctor checks your timing and advises whether a repeat test is needed.
A positive result is not something you have to sort out alone. Many STIs are straightforward to treat, and where treatment is appropriate it can be started at the clinic. A GMC-registered doctor explains the result, arranges any confirmatory testing, and gives clear, confidential guidance on what happens next.
Where a result calls for it, the doctor can prescribe or provide the right treatment, such as a course of antibiotics or antivirals, during your appointment.
Telling recent partners so they can test and treat helps prevent reinfection. We give discreet, practical advice and written information you can share confidentially.
For some infections a repeat test confirms the treatment has worked. We arrange that confirmatory test and any follow-up where it is needed.
If a result needs specialist input, the doctor refers you to the right service and, with your consent, shares a summary with your NHS GP.
A calm, unhurried appointment in a private clinic, not a busy waiting room. Your result is sent by secure password-protected email and is never shared without your consent.
A GMC-registered doctor reviews your request and, if you mention a possible exposure, advises whether to test now or repeat later, so a falsely reassuring early result is avoided.
If a result is positive or needs confirming, the doctor contacts you discreetly and explains the next steps, confirmatory testing, treatment, or referral, so you are never left to interpret a result alone.
Samples are taken in our CQC-registered Kingston clinic by an experienced practitioner and processed by an accredited UK pathology laboratory.
Booked online without a referral. Same-day, Saturday and out-of-hours appointments are offered subject to availability. The clinic is opposite Kingston Station.
We are clear about which infections each package covers and which need a swab, urine or blood sample, so you know exactly what you are and are not testing for.
Home-kit STI tests post a finger-prick or self-sample kit and return an emailed result. At KONCEPT® the sample is taken in our Kingston clinic, the timing is reviewed against any exposure, and a GMC-registered doctor reviews the result and supports you through any positive finding.

|---|---|---|

| If a result is positive | "Contact your GP or a clinic." No onward support. | The doctor explains the next step, arranges confirmatory testing, and refers for treatment or to a sexual health service as needed. |
| Regulation and privacy | Online retailer. Data handling varies. | CQC-registered private clinic. GMC-registered doctors. ICO-registered, results sent securely. |
| Scope | Varies by kit, sometimes unclear what is and is not covered. | Clear packages from a four-infection screen to a multi-site screen, with the sample type stated for each. |
The NHS provides comprehensive sexual health care and remains the right route for many people. NHS sexual health (GUM) clinics are free and cover the full range of STIs. KONCEPT® is designed to complement, not replace, that care, for people who want a fast, private screen on their own timing. Where helpful, we share results with your NHS GP for continuity.
| Standard NHS approach | What KONCEPT® adds | |

| Booking and access | Via an NHS sexual health (GUM) clinic, subject to local appointment availability. | Book directly without a referral. Same-day, Saturday and out-of-hours appointments at the Kingston clinic, subject to availability. |
| Scope of testing | Comprehensive, including chlamydia and gonorrhoea swabs and urine tests, free of charge. | Clear screening packages and standalone tests, with the doctor advising which combination of samples suits you. |

NHS provision varies by region and clinical context, and the NHS sexual health pathway remains appropriate for many people, particularly after a high-risk exposure or for a full screen. KONCEPT® encourages continued NHS GP involvement and shares clinical summaries with your NHS GP on request. Guidance is available from NHS sexual health and BASHH.
Pick a screening package or a standalone test online, in person, or added during a GP consultation. A GMC-registered doctor reviews your request and, if relevant, advises on timing after any exposure.
An experienced practitioner takes your blood and any urine or swab sample in our discreet Kingston clinic. No fasting or special preparation needed.
Samples are processed by an accredited UK pathology laboratory. Any reactive HIV or syphilis result is confirmed before any diagnosis.
Most results within 2 to 5 working days. A confidential outcome note from the doctor is sent to your email, password-protected.
Every result is reviewed by a GMC-registered doctor. If everything is negative, your outcome note confirms it, and the doctor can advise whether and when to retest based on the window period. If a result is positive or needs confirming, the doctor contacts you discreetly to explain the next steps, which may include a confirmatory test, treatment, or referral to a sexual health service. You are supported through whatever the result is.
A sexual health check often sits alongside a wider health review. The doctor can recommend the most useful additional panel or service at booking.

It depends on what you want covered. The Core STI Screen checks the four most common concerns (chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV and syphilis). The Plus and Advanced screens add hepatitis B and C and further organisms. The Comprehensive screen adds throat and rectal swabs for people who need multi-site testing. If you only want the blood-borne infections, choose the STI Blood Screen; if you only want chlamydia and gonorrhoea, choose that standalone test. A GMC-registered doctor reviews your request and can advise on the right choice when you book.
STIs are common. In England in 2024 there were 168,889 chlamydia diagnoses (the most commonly diagnosed STI), 71,802 gonorrhoea diagnoses and 13,030 syphilis diagnoses, with almost 2.4 million sexual health screens carried out, according to the UK Health Security Agency. Many STIs cause no symptoms, so UKHSA advises testing at least once a year if you have had condomless sex with a new or casual partner, even if you feel well.
HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and hepatitis C are detected from a blood sample. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea, the two most common STIs, are not blood-borne and need a urine sample or a swab. A full screen therefore combines both kinds of sample, which is why the packages include blood plus urine or swab testing. The standalone STI Blood Screen covers the blood-borne infections only.
Each infection has a window period, the time after exposure before a test becomes reliable. Testing too early can give a falsely reassuring result. The doctor reviews your timing when you book and will advise whether to test now, wait, or take an initial test and repeat it later to be sure. If you tell us roughly when the possible exposure was, we can guide you.

Most results are returned within 2 to 5 working days. Some of the wider PCR profiles take a little longer, and if a specific test takes more time you will be told at booking.
Yes. Every result is reviewed by a GMC-registered doctor. If everything is negative, your outcome note confirms it. If a result is positive or needs confirming, the doctor contacts you discreetly to explain the next steps, which may include a confirmatory test, treatment, or referral to a specialist or sexual health service. You are supported through whatever the result is.
A single administration fee that covers your whole visit, charged once per visit and never per test, however many tests you book. The all-in package prices shown already include it.
If you may have been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) can reduce the risk of infection but is time-critical and must be started as soon as possible. Do not wait for a test. Contact an NHS sexual health (GUM) clinic or an A&E department urgently. STI testing here is for screening, not for emergency post-exposure care.
Home-kit STI tests post a finger-prick or self-sample kit and return an emailed result. At KONCEPT® blood is taken by a venous draw in our Kingston clinic, any swab or urine sample is collected in person, the timing is reviewed against any exposure so the window period is accounted for, and a GMC-registered doctor reviews the result and supports you through any positive finding.
