By the numbers

Why the under-eye needs a careful approach

Under-eye skin

Among the thinnest on the body, about 0.5 mm, against roughly 2 mm on the cheek

Under-eye structure

Has little or no fat layer beneath it, one reason filler is higher-risk there

Treated as a course

Commonly 2 to 3 sessions, then maintenance

Skin-thickness figures from peer-reviewed ultrasound studies of facial skin. Polynucleotides support the skin’s own repair processes rather than replacing volume. They do not stop ageing, and results are maintained over time.

What it is

What are polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides are purified fragments of DNA, most commonly derived from salmon or trout and prepared to a medical standard. Injected into the skin, they support the activity of fibroblasts, the cells that maintain collagen and elastin, and they help the skin hold hydration. Over a planned course this can improve skin firmness and the look of tired or crepey skin.

They are sometimes described as a skin booster or bio-remodelling treatment. Importantly, polynucleotides are not a dermal filler. They are not used to add volume or change shape. They work on the quality and health of the skin itself.

What it helps

What polynucleotides can improve

Polynucleotides are chosen by patients who want healthier, better-hydrated skin rather than added volume. They are commonly used to support:

Under-eye

A safer, doctor-led approach to the under-eye

The under-eye, or tear-trough, is a technically demanding and higher-risk area for dermal filler. Filler placed under the eye can be associated with prolonged or chronic swelling, a bluish tinge, migration over time, and the area sits close to important blood vessels. For these reasons many doctors are cautious about under-eye filler.

At KONCEPT® we often recommend polynucleotides to improve the quality of under-eye skin as a lower-risk approach that works on the skin itself. Filler in this area is only considered where a doctor judges it genuinely appropriate, after assessing you in person. You can read more on our under-eye treatment page.

How it works

Your treatment, step by step

1. Consultation

Medical history, skin assessment and a check that polynucleotides are suitable for you.

2. Treatment plan

Your doctor agrees a realistic course and what to expect, with pre-care guidance.

3. The sessions

A short course, commonly two to three sessions a few weeks apart, each taking minutes.

4. Review

Results build gradually. Your doctor reviews progress and advises on maintenance.

Polynucleotides are planned as a course because skin quality is something we build and then maintain over time, rather than a single one-off result. Your doctor will set a plan that fits your skin and your goals.

Your wellbeing comes first

A doctor-led view on appearance and wellbeing

Wanting to look and feel your best is completely normal. Sometimes, though, distress about appearance is driven by how we feel rather than by anything a treatment can change. Body Dysmorphic Disorder, or BDD, is a recognised mental-health condition where a person becomes preoccupied with a perceived flaw that others barely notice. Studies report that around 2 in 100 people in the general population are affected, rising to roughly 7 to 15 in 100 among people seeking cosmetic treatment.

Because your treatment here is led by a GMC-registered doctor, your consultation considers your wellbeing as well as your skin. If a doctor feels a treatment is unlikely to help, or that the real concern is how you feel rather than how you look, the honest and caring answer is to say so rather than to treat. We can talk it through and point you towards support, including your GP and the BDD Foundation.

FAQs

Polynucleotides, common questions

What are polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides are an injectable skin-booster treatment. They are purified fragments of DNA, most commonly from salmon or trout, prepared to a medical standard. Placed into the skin, they support the skin’s own repair processes and the activity of fibroblasts, the cells that maintain collagen and elastin. Over a course, this can improve skin hydration, firmness and overall quality. They are not a dermal filler and are not used primarily to add volume.

How are polynucleotides different from dermal filler?

Dermal filler adds volume and shape. Polynucleotides work on skin quality, hydration and tissue health rather than volume. For some areas, particularly the delicate under-eye, a doctor may prefer polynucleotides because they improve the skin itself with a different and lower-risk profile than filler in that area. Your doctor will advise which is appropriate for you, or whether a combination suits your goals.

Can polynucleotides help the under-eye area?

Yes. Improving the quality, hydration and firmness of thin under-eye skin is one of the most common reasons patients choose polynucleotides. The under-eye is a high-risk area for dermal filler, so at KONCEPT a doctor will often recommend polynucleotides to improve under-eye skin rather than placing filler there. Suitability is assessed case by case at your consultation.

How many sessions will I need?

Polynucleotides are planned as a course, commonly two to three sessions spaced a few weeks apart, with periodic maintenance afterwards because skin quality is something we maintain over time. Your doctor sets a realistic plan at your consultation based on your skin and goals. Results build gradually rather than appearing immediately.

How much do polynucleotides cost at KONCEPT?

Polynucleotides are £350 for a single session and £892.50 for a course of three. The full price list is published on our aesthetic prices page, and the final plan is confirmed at your consultation.

Is there downtime, and does it hurt?

Most patients find the treatment comfortable and downtime is usually short. Small injection points, mild redness or minor swelling are normal and typically settle within a day or two. Full pre-care and aftercare guidance is provided, and your doctor will go through what to expect and when to contact the clinic.

Who should not have polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides are not suitable for everyone. They are generally avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding, with active skin infection at the site, with a known allergy to fish or to any component, and they need careful assessment if you have certain medical conditions or take medicines that affect bleeding or immunity. This is why every treatment starts with a doctor-led suitability assessment. See our contraindications page for detail.

How long do polynucleotides last, and when will I see results?

Results build gradually rather than appearing straight away. Many patients begin to notice an improvement in skin quality over the weeks after each session, with the fuller effect once a course is complete. The benefit is commonly maintained for several months, and we plan periodic maintenance because skin quality is something we keep up over time. Your doctor gives you a realistic timeline at your consultation, and individual results vary.

Who performs the treatment, and do I need a referral?

Your treatment is performed by Dr Maryam Attarzadeh, a GMC-registered doctor and JCCP-registered aesthetic practitioner, at our CQC-registered Kingston clinic. No GP referral is needed, and you can book a consultation directly. We see patients from across Kingston, Surbiton, New Malden, Wimbledon, Richmond, Teddington and the wider Surrey area.
