What it is

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are soft gels, most commonly based on hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the skin. Placed under the skin, they restore volume that has been lost with age or refine the shape of a feature. The effect is immediate and lasts several months to longer, depending on the area and product.

An important safety point is that hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if a result needs adjusting or if a complication arises. Hyaluronidase is a prescription-only medicine, so it can only be used where there is a prescriber. At KONCEPT® a doctor is on site, so filler can be dissolved and any complication managed medically.

Under-eye, the doctor-led approach

The under-eye, or tear trough, is one of the most technically demanding and higher-risk areas for dermal filler. For most patients we recommend polynucleotides to improve the quality of under-eye skin rather than placing filler there, and filler is only considered where a doctor judges it genuinely appropriate. You can read more on our under-eye treatment page and our polynucleotides page.

Your wellbeing comes first

Body Dysmorphic Disorder and feeling good about a decision

Choosing to have filler is a personal decision, and most people who have it are happy and well. For some, though, distress about a feature is driven by how they feel rather than by how the feature actually looks, and no amount of treatment settles that distress. Body Dysmorphic Disorder, or BDD, is a recognised mental-health condition of this kind. It is more common among people seeking cosmetic treatment, where studies report around 7 to 15 in every 100 may be affected, compared with about 2 in every 100 people generally.

A doctor-led consultation is the right place to notice this. Because Dr Maryam is a GMC-registered doctor, your appointment considers your wellbeing alongside your appearance. If filler is unlikely to help, or if the concern seems to be about how you feel rather than how you look, the caring answer is to say so rather than to treat, and to point you towards support. Helpful first steps are your GP and the BDD Foundation, a UK charity.

FAQs

Dermal fillers, common questions

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are gels, most commonly based on hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in skin. Placed under the skin by a trained injector, they restore lost volume or refine the contour of areas such as the lips, cheeks and chin. At KONCEPT they are placed by a GMC-registered doctor after a medical consultation.

Are dermal fillers reversible?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if needed, for example to adjust a result or to manage a complication. This is a prescription-only medicine, so it can only be given safely where there is a prescriber. At KONCEPT a doctor is on site, so filler can be dissolved and any complication managed medically.

Which areas can be treated?

Common areas include the lips, cheeks, chin, temples and the nasolabial folds and marionette lines. The under-eye, or tear trough, is a higher-risk area, so for most patients we recommend polynucleotides to improve under-eye skin rather than placing filler there. Your doctor will advise what suits your goals and your face.

Does it hurt and is there downtime?

Most patients find treatment comfortable. Many fillers contain a local anaesthetic, and numbing can be used. Mild swelling, redness or small bruises are normal for a few days. You will be given full aftercare guidance and advised when to contact the clinic.

How much do dermal fillers cost?

Lip filler is from £350, with cheek and chin contouring from £500 and other areas priced individually. Filler dissolving with hyaluronidase is £400. The full list is on our aesthetic prices page and your plan is confirmed at consultation.

How long do dermal fillers last?

It depends on the product used and the area treated. As a general guide, hyaluronic acid fillers commonly last from several months to around eighteen months, with some areas holding longer than others. Movement, metabolism and the specific product all play a part. Your doctor gives you a realistic estimate for your treatment, and because hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved, the result is adjustable.

How long do dermal fillers take to settle?

Some swelling, and occasionally minor bruising, is normal in the first few days. Most filler looks settled within about two weeks as any swelling resolves and the product integrates with the surrounding tissue. We usually review at that point rather than judging the final result immediately after treatment. Your full pre-care and aftercare guidance explains what is normal and when to contact the clinic.

Is filler always the right answer?

No, and a doctor will tell you if it is not. Sometimes a different treatment suits better, and sometimes the honest answer is to treat less or not at all. Your consultation considers your wellbeing as well as your appearance, and we will talk through what is realistic before any treatment.
