For men they include total and free testosterone, SHBG and PSA. Shared markers include prolactin, morning cortisol, DHEA-S, IGF-1, ACTH and a combined pituitary profile. Yes. Hormone tests are chosen by sex and symptoms, because many markers have sex-specific reference ranges. Women most often test reproductive hormones such as oestradiol, progesterone, FSH and LH, while men most often test testosterone and PSA. Several markers, such as prolactin, thyroid hormones, cortisol and SHBG, are relevant to everyone. Each result is interpreted against the appropriate reference range for you.

Timing matters for several female hormones. FSH, LH and oestradiol are usually taken on day 2 to 5 of your cycle, counting the first day of your period as day 1. Progesterone to check ovulation is usually taken about 7 days before your expected period, often around day 21 of a 28 day cycle. AMH is stable across the cycle, so it can be taken on any day. If your cycles are irregular or absent, the doctor will advise on timing, and you can note this when you book.

Testosterone is highest in the morning, so a male testosterone test is best taken before 11am for a reliable result. A fasting morning sample is often advised. If a first result is low or borderline, a repeat morning test is usually recommended before any conclusion, because levels vary from day to day.

Most hormone tests do not need fasting, although a morning testosterone test is often taken fasting. One thing to watch is biotin, found in many hair, skin and nail supplements, which can interfere with several hormone assays. If you take biotin, stop it 48 to 72 hours before your test. Mention any hormonal contraception or HRT when you book, as these affect interpretation.

AMH, Anti-Mullerian Hormone, is a measure of ovarian reserve, the size of the remaining egg pool. It is one input alongside your age and clinical history, and it does not predict the chance of conception, IVF success or the time until menopause. PSA, prostate-specific antigen, is available for men as a Total PSA or an Enhanced PSA that adds the free PSA percentage. PSA is a prostate marker used as a screening aid and interpreted by a doctor alongside your age and symptoms. It is not on its own a diagnosis of prostate cancer, because PSA can be raised for several non-cancer reasons. A raised or borderline result is reviewed and the doctor advises on the appropriate next step.

Most results are returned within 2 to 5 working days. The outcome note is sent to your email, password-protected. If a particular test takes longer, you will be told when you book.

Individual hormone tests start from 59 pounds, for example oestradiol 59 pounds, FSH 65 pounds, LH 65 pounds, prolactin 65 pounds, testosterone 75 pounds and Total PSA 89 pounds. A single 39 pound administration fee covers your whole visit, charged once per visit and never per test, so combining several markers in one appointment keeps the admin fee to a single charge. If a GP review is recommended afterwards, that is a separate booking: your NHS GP at no NHS charge, or a KONCEPT GP consultation at 149 pounds.
