PCOS, hirsutism and laser: the facts

Excess hair is one of the most common and distressing features of PCOS, and laser hair removal is recognised in clinical guidelines as a way to manage it. The figures below are from recognised medical sources.

What causes excess hair in PCOS and hirsutism

The short version

  • Hirsutism is coarse, dark hair in a pattern more typical of men, on the face (upper lip, chin, jawline), neck, chest, abdomen and back.
  • It is usually associated with androgens (male-type hormones), and PCOS is the most common underlying cause.
  • Laser hair removal manages the hair. It does not treat PCOS itself, so assessing and managing the underlying cause matters for the best long-term result.
  • New or rapidly worsening excess hair should be assessed by a doctor, which at KONCEPT® can happen alongside treatment.

Why laser suits hormone-driven hair

The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus is a dual-wavelength medical laser, Alexandrite 755 nm and Nd:YAG 1064 nm, so it treats all skin tones safely, including the darker skin tones often affected by PCOS-related hair. Because the growth is hormone-driven, hormonal hair usually needs a course of 8 rather than 6, and ongoing maintenance sessions, since the hormonal drive keeps stimulating follicles over time. A doctor sets a realistic plan for your skin and hair.

Why a doctor assessment matters

Hormone-driven hair responds differently from person to person, so a single fixed setting does not suit everyone. A GMC-registered doctor assesses your skin type, hair and hormonal background, sets the right wavelength and energy for you, and confirms it with a test patch before your first session. That tailoring is the core of safe, effective treatment for PCOS-related hair, and we talk through what to expect beforehand.

Treating the hair and assessing the cause

You can have laser hair removal on its own, or alongside a GP assessment of the underlying hormonal picture. Three pathways, all in the same Kingston clinic:

1

GP consultation

A 30-minute GP consultation to review your symptoms and direct any further investigation.

£149

2

GP plus a blood test

The consultation with a Women's Period & PCOS Hormone Blood Test where appropriate. If the GP identifies a clinical need, you get 10% off any Women's Blood Test.

Blood test £299

3

Wellwomen Check

A personalised GP consultation that builds a tailored plan, with a follow-up after any investigations. 10% off any Women's Blood Test if a clinical need is identified.

£399

See the PCOS blood test and the Wellwomen Check for full details. Laser hair removal itself begins with a free consultation and a £50 redeemable patch test.

Prices for the areas most affected

Facial laser hair removal starts from £55 a session, or from £350 for a course of 8 on the upper lip or chin, the areas most often treated for PCOS. Hormone-driven hair can also follow a male pattern across the chest, stomach and lower back, so the most commonly treated body areas are shown below too. A course of 8 is recommended for hormone-driven hair.

What to expect with hormonal hair

Hair driven by PCOS or another hormonal cause behaves differently from ordinary unwanted hair. The hormones that stimulate it do not simply switch off, so the honest picture is one of steady, lasting control rather than a single course that ends the story. Understanding that from the start makes the results far easier to live with, and it is exactly the plan a doctor would talk through with you.

1

Clearance phase

A course of 8 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, brings the bulk of hormone-driven hair down. Across the course you should see growth become finer, lighter and slower, building gradually rather than all at once.

2

Maintenance phase

Because the hormonal drive carries on, occasional top-up sessions keep new growth in check. Many women settle into just a few sessions a year. This is a normal, expected part of managing PCOS hair, not a sign the treatment has not worked.

An honest word on results

If some hair appears between sessions, that is the hormones at work, not a failure of the laser. Treating the underlying cause alongside, through a GP or the Wellwomen Check, can reduce how much maintenance you need over time. Your doctor will be open with you about what a realistic result looks like for your skin, your hair and your hormonal picture, so there are no surprises.

Frequently asked questions

Can laser hair removal help with PCOS facial hair?

Yes. Laser hair removal is widely used, and included in clinical guidelines, to manage the excess facial and body hair seen with PCOS and other causes of hirsutism. Because the hair growth is hormone-driven, it usually needs more sessions and ongoing maintenance, and laser manages the hair rather than the PCOS itself. At KONCEPT® the underlying cause can be assessed by a GP alongside treatment.

How many laser sessions will I need for hormonal hair?

Hormone-driven hair usually needs a course of 8 rather than 6, and sometimes more, followed by occasional maintenance sessions, because the hormonal drive keeps stimulating follicles over time. Your doctor will set a realistic plan at your consultation.

Will the hair come back, and will I need maintenance forever?

With hormonal hair, some regrowth over time is expected, because the hormones that drive it carry on. This is not a sign the laser has failed. After the initial course of 8, most people keep their result with occasional top-up sessions, often just a few a year. Assessing and managing the underlying cause with a GP, for example through the Wellwomen Check, can reduce how much maintenance you need.

Can laser make hormonal hair worse?

In a small number of people, most often with hormonal conditions, certain skin and hair types, or fine downy hair on the face and neck, laser can paradoxically stimulate finer hair rather than reduce it (paradoxical hypertrichosis). A doctor-led assessment, the correct wavelength and properly set energy levels are how we reduce that risk, and we explain it and obtain your consent before treatment.

Should I have my hormones checked?

New or worsening excess hair is worth assessing. At KONCEPT® you can book a GP consultation (£149) or the Wellwomen Check (£399), and a Women's Period & PCOS Hormone Blood Test (£299) where appropriate. If the GP identifies a clinical need during the consultation, you receive 10% off any Women's Blood Test. Results help guide care, and laser can continue alongside.

Is laser for PCOS hair safe on darker skin?

Yes, when the right laser and settings are used. The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus combines Alexandrite 755 nm and Nd:YAG 1064 nm, so it treats all skin tones, Fitzpatrick I to VI. A doctor assesses your skin type and runs a test patch at least 48 hours before your first treatment.

How much does it cost?

Facial areas commonly treated for PCOS start from about £55 a session for the upper lip or chin, with a course of 8 recommended for hormone-driven hair. The full menu is on the laser hair removal price list. The consultation is free and a £50 redeemable patch test applies. The GP consultation is £149 and the Wellwomen Check is £399.
