A chlamydia test is the most common sexual health check there is, and chlamydia and gonorrhoea are usually tested together because they often occur side by side and are taken from the same sample. This test is for anyone who wants a quick, private result, whether after a new partner, because of symptoms, or simply for reassurance.
It tests for the two most common STIs, chlamydia and gonorrhoea, from a urine sample or swab. It does not cover HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B or hepatitis C, which are found in blood and need the STI blood screen. If you want both at once, a combined STI screening package covers chlamydia and gonorrhoea alongside the blood-borne infections, and the doctor can advise on the right combination.
The most commonly diagnosed STI in the UK, and most common in under-25s. It often has no symptoms, so it is easily passed on unknowingly. Left untreated it can affect fertility, which is why testing matters even without symptoms. It is straightforward to treat when found.
The second most common bacterial STI, and frequently found alongside chlamydia. It can cause discharge or pain when passing urine, but can also be silent. It is treatable, and identifying it early helps prevent complications and onward transmission.
For many people a first-catch urine sample is enough. A vaginal swab, which can be self-taken in private, is the most reliable sample for women. Throat or rectal swabs are used where there has been oral or anal contact. A GMC-registered doctor advises which sample suits you, and reviews your timing, because the test is generally reliable from about two weeks after exposure.
