Symptoms

When to see a vascular surgeon

The most common reasons patients book a vascular consultation with us:

  • Visible varicose veins, raised, rope-like veins on the leg.
  • Aching, heavy or tired legs, particularly after long periods of standing.
  • Itching, burning or tenderness over a vein, or skin near the ankle that has become darker, drier or harder.
  • Leg or ankle swelling that doesn’t fully resolve overnight.
  • A non-healing ulcer or wound on the leg, ankle or foot.
  • Calf or buttock pain when walking that eases with rest (possible peripheral arterial disease).
  • Thread or spider veins you’d like assessed for cosmetic treatment.
  • A history of DVT and you’d like a duplex scan to check for venous reflux or post-thrombotic change.
  • Diabetes with a foot wound, callus or numbness that needs vascular input.
  • Suspected lipoedema, disproportionate, painful leg fat that has not responded to weight loss.

If you’re not sure whether your symptoms need a vascular consultation, call 020 8129 1011 and we’ll talk it through.

Multidisciplinary team

The clinical team behind your vascular care

Vascular care is rarely a single appointment with a single clinician. A patient with a leg ulcer, a diabetic foot wound, lymphoedema or a recent DVT benefits from a small specialist team working alongside the consultant. KONCEPT® is building that team in stages around our two consultants, so every patient is seen by the right clinician for the right step in their care.

Consultant Vascular Surgeon

Mr Magdy Moawad · Mr Abdullah Jibawi

All consultations, duplex scans, theatre procedures and complex case oversight. Both are on the GMC Specialist Register for Vascular Surgery and hold substantive NHS posts at St George’s University Hospitals.

Vascular Sonographer

Diagnostic scan service

Performs routine venous, arterial, carotid and abdominal ultrasound scans with a written report. Complex and recurrent venous mapping remains consultant-performed.

HCPC-registered Podiatrist

Diabetic Foot Clinic lead

Leads the Diabetic Foot Clinic with a full foot examination, neuropathy testing, offloading device fitting, total contact casting and ingrown-toenail surgery under local anaesthetic. Diabetic foot assessments include a full arterial ultrasound scan with same-day consultant escalation if a problem is found.

Tissue Viability Nurse (TVN)

Wound Care & Leg Ulcer Service lead

Leads dressing changes, four-layer and short-stretch compression bandaging, sharp debridement under local anaesthetic, wound photography and progress reviews. The Saturday wound clinic is TVN-led with same-day consultant phone escalation if a concern is found.

Lymphoedema-trained Physiotherapist

Lymphoedema Management lead

Delivers Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), multi-layer compression bandaging for lymphoedema, decongestive therapy and limb measurement. Works alongside the consultant where there is a venous component to the swelling.

How each allied-health service integrates with the consultant pathway

Every allied-health service is held within a clear pathway that escalates to the Consultant Vascular Surgeon where needed.

  • Diagnostic scans, sonographer-performed with consultant-reported complex and recurrent venous mapping.
  • Diabetic Foot Clinic, podiatrist-led with consultant supervision. The new-patient assessment includes a full arterial duplex scan, ABPI and TBI, with same-day consultant input if Charcot foot, critical limb ischaemia, or a high-risk wound is suspected.
  • Wound Care and Leg Ulcer Service, TVN-led, with the venous reflux scan and consultant management of the underlying cause held under the consultant pathway. Compression is only applied after an ABPI confirms the circulation is adequate.
  • Lymphoedema Management, physiotherapist-led, with consultant input where a venous component is suspected and a duplex scan needs to be added.
  • Compression therapy, fitting is done by a specialist nurse, podiatrist or trained fitter. The first step is always a circulation check, because compression can be unsafe when arterial supply is reduced.
  • Podiatric Surgery, ingrown toenail surgery under local anaesthetic, performed by the podiatrist on a stand-alone pathway.

Insurance & self-pay

Insurance and self-pay

You can be seen either through your private medical insurance or as a self-pay patient.

Private medical insurance. Most major UK insurers cover vascular consultation and treatment where there is a clinical indication, such as aching, swelling, skin changes, ulceration, recurrent phlebitis, or venous reflux confirmed on duplex ultrasound. Cosmetic-only treatment is not usually covered. Your insurer will normally request the consultant’s details and a brief clinical summary before authorising.

Recognition is at both clinic level and consultant level, and cover is expanding. Call 020 8129 1011 with your insurer and policy details and we’ll come back to you within one working day with confirmation, before any appointment is booked.

Self-pay. No GP referral is required and you can book directly. Pricing for every treatment is published on the Vascular Surgery pricing page, and you will receive a written quote covering consultation, imaging, the procedure and any follow-up before going ahead.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What does a vascular surgeon do?

A vascular surgeon is a doctor on the GMC Specialist Register who diagnoses and treats conditions of the arteries, veins and lymphatic system (other than the brain and heart). At KONCEPT®, the consultants’ private work is focused on vein and circulation care, including varicose veins, leg ulcers, lipoedema, lymphoedema, peripheral arterial disease and the diabetic foot.

When should I worry about varicose veins?

See a vascular surgeon if you notice skin changes (darkening, dryness or eczema near the ankle), bleeding from a varicose vein, a non-healing ulcer, persistent swelling, a hard tender lump along a vein (possible superficial phlebitis), or sudden one-sided calf swelling and pain (possible DVT, seek urgent assessment). Cosmetic-only varicose veins without symptoms can still be treated, the urgency is lower.

Are varicose veins dangerous?

Most are not, but they’re a sign of underlying venous reflux, which over time can lead to skin damage (lipodermatosclerosis), venous leg ulcers and superficial phlebitis. They also slightly increase the risk of bleeding from a knock to the leg. Treating significant varicose veins reduces these risks.

Should varicose veins be painful?

They can be. Typical symptoms include aching, heaviness, throbbing, itching, restlessness at night or tenderness over the vein, usually worse after long periods of standing or in warm weather. Small varicose veins can be symptomatic too.

How can I prevent varicose veins?

You can’t prevent them entirely (genetics play a strong role), but you can reduce the risk, avoid prolonged standing or sitting, walk regularly, wear well-fitted compression stockings if your job involves long hours on your feet, maintain a healthy weight, and stay active. Once visible varicose veins have developed, they won’t resolve with conservative measures alone.

Who will I see at my appointment?

You will see a consultant vascular surgeon. The assessment, duplex ultrasound and any procedure at KONCEPT® are carried out by a consultant on the GMC Specialist Register for Vascular Surgery.

Do I need a GP referral?

For self-pay, no, you can book directly. Most insurers allow direct booking. A small number of insurers still require a GP referral letter, and we will confirm what your insurer needs when you enquire.

How much does private varicose vein treatment cost in London?

At KONCEPT®: EVLA and RFA from £2,650, VenaSeal from £2,495, ClariVein from £1,995, foam sclerotherapy from £795, phlebectomy from £895 (all per leg). Initial consultation with duplex is £325 (one leg) or £495 (both). Full price list →

Can I have a duplex ultrasound the same day as my consultation?

Yes, in most cases. Where additional imaging is needed, we’ll arrange it as quickly as possible.

Are the consultants NHS-active?

Yes. Both Mr Moawad and Mr Jibawi hold substantive consultant posts at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust alongside their work at KONCEPT®.

Is varicose vein treatment covered by private medical insurance?

Most major UK insurers cover treatment when a clinical indication exists (symptoms or venous reflux confirmed on duplex). Cosmetic-only treatment is not usually covered. Call 020 8129 1011 to confirm your insurer.

What if my insurer isn’t recognised at KONCEPT® yet?

You can be seen as a self-pay patient. Depending on your policy, some insurers will reimburse against an itemised invoice, we provide the documentation you need to submit a claim. Call 020 8129 1011 to talk it through.

How long is recovery from a varicose vein procedure?

Most patients walk out the same day, return to normal daily activity within 24 to 48 hours and resume exercise within 1 to 2 weeks. Compression stockings are typically worn for up to two weeks (not required after VenaSeal). Detailed recovery advice is on the varicose vein treatment page.

What’s the difference between varicose veins, thread veins and spider veins?

Varicose veins are the larger, raised, rope-like veins caused by reflux in deeper venous channels. Thread / spider veins are very fine surface veins, usually less than 1 mm wide, and are most often a cosmetic concern. Techniques differ, see the varicose veins and thread veins pages.

Do you offer evening or weekend appointments?

Yes. KONCEPT® runs Monday to Sunday with extended weekday hours. We’ll match you to the next available slot at booking.
