Bone health in UK men

Why a baseline matters before symptoms appear

Bone disease in men is under-tested, under-recognised and often only diagnosed after a fragility fracture. The figures below give UK context. They are presented as background, not as a prediction of any individual's bone health.

1 in 5
UK men over 50 will break a bone because of osteoporosis
3.5m
UK people estimated to have osteoporosis
~500,000

300,000+

The bone-relevant blood test is the first step, not the diagnosis. It identifies reversible contributors (low vitamin D, abnormal calcium handling, kidney or liver patterns that affect bone metabolism) and informs whether a DEXA bone density scan is the right next step.

Who this panel is for

A bone-relevant baseline for men

Men's bone health is often overlooked, but men account for around one in five hip fractures in the UK and male osteoporosis is under-diagnosed (NHS, Royal Osteoporosis Society). The Men's Bone Health panel is a sensible blood-level baseline of the minerals and vitamin that most directly affect bone, plus the kidney and liver biochemistry that should be interpreted alongside them. It works well when bone health is a family concern, after a low-impact fracture, before starting bone-active treatment, after a long course of steroids, or simply as part of a midlife review.

Family history of osteoporosis After a low-impact fracture Long-term steroid use Low body weight or low BMI Heavy alcohol or long-term smoker Midlife bone-health review

A blood test is one part of a bone-health workup. Bone-density measurement (DEXA scan) and clinical assessment remain the cornerstone of an osteoporosis diagnosis; this blood panel checks the reversible biochemical contributors and is an excellent starting point. If you have already had a DEXA scan and need treatment monitoring, share the report at booking and the doctor will interpret your bloods in that context.

What this panel measures

The bone-relevant biochemistry, in one venous draw

Vitamin D (25-OH)

25-hydroxyvitamin D

The most common reversible cause of low bone density in the UK. Vitamin D deficiency reduces calcium absorption and over time weakens bone. Easily corrected with supplementation once identified.

Calcium

Serum calcium

The principal bone mineral. Read alongside albumin (adjusted calcium) and vitamin D for the most accurate picture. Persistently raised or low calcium needs investigation.

Phosphate

Serum phosphate

Works with calcium and vitamin D to maintain bone mineralisation. Phosphate is also a useful marker of kidney handling of minerals.

Urea and electrolytes

Sodium · Potassium · Chloride · Bicarbonate · Urea · Creatinine · eGFR

The full kidney function panel. Kidney function influences how the body handles vitamin D, calcium and phosphate, so kidney biochemistry should be interpreted alongside the bone markers.

Liver function tests

Bilirubin · ALP · AST · ALT · GGT · Total Protein · Albumin · Globulin

The full liver panel. Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) in particular is also a bone-turnover enzyme; raised ALP can reflect either liver or bone activity, so the full LFT pattern helps the doctor interpret it correctly. Albumin is needed to calculate adjusted calcium.

Each result is interpreted by the doctor against the appropriate reference range for you. This panel is a biochemistry baseline; for osteoporosis diagnosis you may also need a DEXA scan, which is not a blood test.

Who the bone health test is for

  • Men over 50 who want a baseline before symptoms appear
  • Men with a family history of osteoporosis or hip fracture
  • Men on long-term steroid medication (a recognised secondary cause of osteoporosis)
  • Men with low testosterone (hypogonadism affects bone density)
  • Men with coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease or chronic kidney disease (all affect bone metabolism)
  • Men who have had a previous low-impact fracture (recurrence risk warrants assessment)
  • Men with reduced sun exposure or restrictive diets (vitamin D deficiency risk)
  • Men starting a serious training programme who want a baseline for energy and bone health
Three ways to book your bone health panel

Test alone, with a GP review, or inside a Wellman Check

How KONCEPT® complements your NHS care

The NHS provides comprehensive care and remains the right route for many men. KONCEPT® is designed to complement, not replace, that care, for men who want a bone-relevant biochemistry baseline on their own timing. Where helpful, we share results with your NHS GP for continuity, particularly important for ongoing bone-health management.

How it works

Four steps from booking to result

1

Book your panel

Online, in person, or added during a GP consultation. Each request is reviewed by a GMC-registered doctor for clinical appropriateness.

2

10 to 15 minute appointment

An experienced practitioner takes your sample in-clinic. Fasting is not strictly required but morning samples are preferred. Stop biotin supplements 48 to 72 hours before.

3

Accredited UK lab

Samples are processed by an accredited UK pathology laboratory.

4

Doctor-reviewed outcome

Most results within 2 to 5 working days. A short outcome note is sent securely to your email, password-protected.

What happens after your results

If everything is normal, the outcome note confirms no follow-up is needed. Where vitamin D is low, supplementation can be advised straight away. If the doctor recommends imaging (DEXA scan) or specialist input, you can be referred privately or asked to discuss with your NHS GP, depending on what you prefer.

Frequently asked

Questions our patients ask about the Men's Bone Health panel

Who is this panel for?

For men with a family history of osteoporosis, those who have had a low-impact fracture, men on long-term steroid medication, men with low body weight or BMI, heavy alcohol users or long-term smokers, and any man wanting a midlife bone-relevant biochemistry baseline.

What does the panel measure?

Vitamin D (25-OH), Calcium, Phosphate, full Urea & Electrolytes (Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Bicarbonate, Urea, Creatinine, eGFR), and full Liver Function Tests (Bilirubin, ALP, AST, ALT, GGT, Total Protein, Albumin, Globulin).

Is a blood test enough to diagnose osteoporosis?

No. Osteoporosis diagnosis is based on bone-density measurement (DEXA scan) and clinical risk assessment. This blood panel covers the reversible biochemical contributors to bone loss, identifies vitamin D deficiency and provides a baseline kidney and liver biochemistry that should be interpreted alongside any imaging.

Do I need to fast before the test?

Fasting is not strictly required for these markers, but a morning sample is preferred. Stop biotin supplements 48 to 72 hours before.

How quickly do I get my results?

Most results within 2 to 5 working days, sent securely to your email, password-protected.

What happens if my vitamin D is low?

Vitamin D deficiency is common in the UK and is usually corrected with supplementation. The doctor will recommend a regimen in the outcome note. Repeat testing is typically done after 3 months to confirm restoration.

I take steroid medication. Should I get this panel?

Long-term oral steroid use is a recognised risk factor for bone loss, per NICE CKS guidance. Please discuss with the prescribing doctor and consider this panel alongside DEXA imaging.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book online, in person, or add the panel during a GP consultation at KONCEPT®.

How does this compare with home-kit bone packages?

Home-kit packages return a PDF. At KONCEPT® the sample is a venous draw in our Kingston clinic, with bone markers interpreted alongside the kidney and liver biochemistry by a GMC-registered doctor. Review and outcome note are included in the £238 panel price.

Why pay privately if I could get a bone health test on the NHS?

The NHS provides comprehensive care and remains the right route for many men. KONCEPT® complements that care for men who want a proactive bone-relevant biochemistry baseline on their own timing.

Where is the clinic?

46 to 48 Wood Street, Kingston upon Thames, KT1 1UW, opposite Kingston station.
