What hormone testing covers

The right markers for your symptoms, chosen with a doctor

Hormones set the pace for energy, mood, sleep, weight, your cycle and fertility, libido and much more. A blood test measures the levels, and a GMC-registered doctor reads them against the appropriate reference range for you, because many hormones have sex-specific ranges and several need to be taken at the right point in the cycle or time of day. Below are the individual tests, grouped so you can see what suits you. If you would rather have a ready-made panel, the doctor can point you to the PCOS, perimenopause or Wellman and Wellwomen pathways.

Getting an accurate result

Timing matters for hormones

Many hormones change through the cycle or the day, so when the sample is taken affects the result. The doctor will confirm the right timing for you when you book, but as a guide:

  • FSH, LH and oestradiol: usually taken on day 2 to 5 of your cycle, counting the first day of your period as day 1.
  • Progesterone (to check ovulation): usually taken about 7 days before your expected period, often around day 21 of a 28 day cycle.
  • Testosterone (men): best taken in the morning before 11am, often fasting, with a repeat if a first result is low or borderline.
  • AMH: stable across the cycle, so it can be taken on any day.
  • Biotin supplements: stop 48 to 72 hours before testing, as biotin can interfere with several hormone assays.
When to consider a test

Symptoms hormone testing can help make sense of

People book hormone tests for irregular, heavy or absent periods, for menopause and perimenopause symptoms, for fertility questions, for low libido or erectile difficulties, for symptoms of low testosterone, for unexplained fatigue, weight or mood changes, and for signs such as acne or unwanted hair growth. A blood test does not explain everything on its own, but it gives a doctor the objective picture to interpret alongside your history and decide what, if anything, to do next.

What happens after your results

A GMC-registered doctor reviews your result and sends a short outcome note, either no action needed or a GP review recommended. If your levels need attention, you choose how to act on it: your NHS GP at no NHS cost, or a KONCEPT® GP consultation at £149 to discuss the result and any options, including onward referral where appropriate.

Working alongside the NHS

How KONCEPT® complements your NHS care

The NHS provides comprehensive hormone and endocrine care, and remains the right route for many people, particularly anyone with a diagnosed condition or significant symptoms. KONCEPT® is designed to complement, not replace, that care. It makes individual hormone markers easy to access directly, without referral, with the timing guidance that hormone tests need, an appointment at a time that suits you, and a doctor to interpret the result. With your written consent we share a clinical summary with your NHS GP so your care stays joined up. NHS provision varies by region and clinical context, and KONCEPT® encourages continued NHS GP involvement.

Frequently asked

Questions our patients ask about hormone testing

What hormones can you test?

We offer individual hormone blood tests for women and men, plus shared pituitary and adrenal markers. For women these include oestradiol, progesterone, FSH, LH, testosterone, SHBG and AMH. For men they include total and free testosterone, SHBG and PSA. Shared markers include prolactin, morning cortisol, DHEA-S, IGF-1, ACTH and a combined pituitary profile. A GMC-registered doctor can advise which markers suit your symptoms, and combined panels are available through our PCOS, perimenopause and Wellman or Wellwomen pathways.

Do you test hormones for both women and men?

Yes. Hormone tests are chosen by sex and symptoms, because many markers have sex-specific reference ranges. Women most often test reproductive hormones such as oestradiol, progesterone, FSH and LH, while men most often test testosterone and PSA. Several markers, such as prolactin, thyroid hormones, cortisol and SHBG, are relevant to everyone. Each result is interpreted against the appropriate reference range for you.

When in my cycle should a female hormone test be taken?

Timing matters for several female hormones. FSH, LH and oestradiol are usually taken on day 2 to 5 of your cycle, counting the first day of your period as day 1. Progesterone to check ovulation is usually taken about 7 days before your expected period, often around day 21 of a 28 day cycle. AMH is stable across the cycle, so it can be taken on any day. If your cycles are irregular or absent, the doctor will advise on timing, and you can note this when you book.

When should a male testosterone test be taken?

Testosterone is highest in the morning, so a male testosterone test is best taken before 11am for a reliable result. A fasting morning sample is often advised. If a first result is low or borderline, a repeat morning test is usually recommended before any conclusion, because levels vary from day to day.

Do I need to fast or stop any supplements?

Most hormone tests do not need fasting, although a morning testosterone test is often taken fasting. One thing to watch is biotin, found in many hair, skin and nail supplements, which can interfere with several hormone assays. If you take biotin, stop it 48 to 72 hours before your test. Mention any hormonal contraception or HRT when you book, as these affect interpretation.

What is the AMH test?

AMH, Anti-Mullerian Hormone, is a measure of ovarian reserve, the size of the remaining egg pool. It is one input alongside your age and clinical history, and it does not predict the chance of conception, IVF success or the time until menopause. Because it has its own detail and careful interpretation, AMH has a dedicated page. See the AMH Test page for the full explanation and pricing.

Is PSA included, and what does it mean?

PSA, prostate-specific antigen, is available for men as a Total PSA or an Enhanced PSA that adds the free PSA percentage. PSA is a prostate marker used as a screening aid and interpreted by a doctor alongside your age and symptoms. It is not on its own a diagnosis of prostate cancer, because PSA can be raised for several non-cancer reasons. A raised or borderline result is reviewed and the doctor advises on the appropriate next step.

How quickly do I get my results?

Most results are returned within 2 to 5 working days. The outcome note is sent to your email, password-protected. If a particular test takes longer, you will be told when you book.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book online, in person at the clinic, or add hormone tests during a GP consultation at KONCEPT®. A GMC-registered doctor reviews each request for clinical suitability and helps choose the right markers before your appointment is confirmed.

How much do hormone tests cost?

Individual hormone tests start from 59 pounds, for example oestradiol 59 pounds, FSH 65 pounds, LH 65 pounds, prolactin 65 pounds, testosterone 75 pounds and Total PSA 89 pounds. A single 39 pound administration fee covers your whole visit, charged once per visit and never per test, so combining several markers in one appointment keeps the admin fee to a single charge. If a GP review is recommended afterwards, that is a separate booking: your NHS GP at no NHS charge, or a KONCEPT GP consultation at 149 pounds.

Is hormone testing available on the NHS, and how does KONCEPT complement it?

Hormone testing is part of NHS care when clinically indicated, and the NHS pathway remains the right route for many people. KONCEPT® complements that by offering the same markers directly, without referral, with timing guidance, same-day, Saturday and out-of-hours appointments subject to availability, and a doctor-reviewed outcome note. With your written consent we share a clinical summary with your NHS GP so the result is added to your NHS record.

Do you share my results with my NHS GP?

Only with your written consent. We can send a clinical summary to your NHS GP so your result is added to your NHS record and your ongoing care stays joined up.

Where is the clinic?

46 to 48 Wood Street, Kingston upon Thames, KT1 1UW. KONCEPT® Medical Clinic is opposite Kingston station, with parking nearby at the Bentall Centre.
