Hajj and Umrah vaccinations

If you are travelling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah, you must show a certificate for the Meningitis ACWY vaccine to get your visa. KONCEPT® Medical Clinic gives the vaccine and issues the certificate at the same appointment, so you leave with the document you need.

What Saudi Arabia requires

  • A certificate for the Meningitis ACWY (quadrivalent conjugate) vaccine for everyone aged 1 year or older travelling for Hajj or Umrah.
  • The vaccine must be given at least 10 days before you arrive in Saudi Arabia.
  • The certificate is valid for 5 years from the date of vaccination.
  • The certificate must show the vaccine name, the vaccine type and the date it was given. Ours does.

Children

We vaccinate children from 1 year of age, at the same price as adults, and each child receives their own certificate. Babies under 1 year do not need the vaccine for the visa.

Do I need it if I had a meningitis vaccine at school?

Most people in the UK had a Meningitis ACWY vaccine at school at around age 14. If that was more than 5 years ago, it no longer counts for your visa and you need a new dose. If you had one in the last 5 years, bring your record or certificate and we will check it with you.

Other vaccines we recommend for pilgrims

Saudi Arabia only requires the ACWY certificate from UK travellers, but Hajj and Umrah mean very large crowds and close contact. We usually recommend:

Flu

The seasonal flu vaccine, which the Saudi Ministry of Health advises for all pilgrims.

Hepatitis A

Spread through food and water.

Hepatitis B

Advised for pilgrims, particularly men having their head shaved after Hajj or Umrah.

Tetanus, diphtheria and polio

Make sure your booster is up to date.

If you are travelling from or through another country before Saudi Arabia, extra rules for polio or yellow fever may apply. Tell us your full route and we will check.

When to book

Book at least 2 to 3 weeks before you fly. That leaves time for the 10 day rule and for any second doses. Hajj 2027 is expected in mid May 2027, and Umrah is busiest during Ramadan, expected to begin in early February 2027. Appointments fill up in the weeks before both, so book early.

Your Hajj and Umrah checklist

  • Meningitis ACWY vaccine, at least 10 days before arrival
  • Your vaccination certificate, kept with your passport (we give you a copy too)
  • Flu vaccine
  • Hepatitis A and B, and your tetanus, diphtheria and polio booster checked
  • Enough of any regular medicines for the whole trip, in their original packaging
  • A plan for the heat: water, shade, sun protection and rest

Meningitis ACWY for Hajj and Umrah, including the certificate: £95 per person.

Travelling as a family or group? When 3 or more people book together, the price is £75 per person, certificate included. One £50 reservation fee covers everyone booked together, and it is taken off your final bill. For group bookings, please call us so we can book everyone together.

What are travel vaccinations?

Travel vaccinations protect you against infections that are common in other parts of the world but rare in the UK. Which ones you need depends on where you are going, how long you are staying, what you will be doing and your own health. Some are required for entry to a country. Most are recommended to keep you well while you are away.

What to expect at your appointment

1

Your travel health check

We go through where you are going, when, for how long, and what you will be doing, along with your medical history and the vaccines you have already had. Please bring any vaccination records you have.

2

Your vaccines

We agree a plan with you and give your vaccines in a clean, private clinic room.

3

Records and certificates

You leave with a written record of every vaccine given, and a certificate where one is needed, such as the Meningitis ACWY certificate for Hajj and Umrah.

4

Further doses

If your course needs more than one dose, we book your next appointments before you leave so you are fully covered before you fly.

Before and after your travel vaccinations

Before your appointment

  • Bring your vaccination records, your travel dates and your full route, including any countries you pass through.
  • Bring a list of any medicines you take.
  • Eat and drink as normal beforehand, and wear a short sleeved or loose top so we can reach your upper arm easily.
  • For the oral cholera vaccine, do not eat or drink for 1 hour before and 1 hour after each dose.
  • If you have had another vaccine in the last 4 weeks, tell us which one, as some vaccines need to be given on the same day or at least 4 weeks apart.

Tell us before your vaccination if you

  • Have had a serious allergic reaction to a vaccine, or to any ingredient in one.
  • Have a high temperature or feel unwell on the day. A minor cold is usually fine, but with a fever we may move your appointment.
  • Are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Have a weakened immune system, or take medicines that affect it, such as steroid tablets, chemotherapy or biologic treatments. Some vaccines are not suitable, and we will advise you on the right options.
  • Take blood thinning medicines or have a bleeding disorder.
  • Have fainted after an injection before. We can vaccinate you lying down.

After your vaccination

  • We ask you to stay in the clinic for 15 minutes after your vaccine, or 30 minutes if you have a history of allergies, so we can make sure you feel well.
  • A sore, red or slightly swollen arm for 1 to 2 days is common. Keep moving your arm gently, and a cool cloth can help.
  • Some people have a mild temperature, a headache, aching muscles or tiredness for a day or two. Paracetamol or ibuprofen can help if needed. Follow the dose on the pack, especially for children.
  • The oral cholera vaccine can cause a mild upset stomach.
  • After the chickenpox vaccine, a few spots can appear within a month. Keep them covered and avoid close contact with pregnant women, newborn babies and people with a weakened immune system until the spots have dried.
  • You can usually carry on with normal activities, including work, exercise and showering, on the same day.
  • Finish every dose of your course on the dates we give you, and keep your vaccination record or certificate with your passport.
