Laser hair removal: the evidence

Laser hair removal is one of the most studied cosmetic treatments, and it is recognised in clinical guidelines for managing unwanted and hormone-driven hair. The figures below are drawn from published sources and recognised medical bodies.

In guidelines

  • Published sources report that a full course commonly produces a substantial, lasting reduction in hair, widely cited as up to around 90%, with any regrowth finer and slower. Hair grows in cycles, which is why a planned course is needed rather than a single session.
  • PCOS affects an estimated 1 in 10 women in the UK, and more than 70% of women with PCOS experience hirsutism. The Endocrine Society clinical practice guideline includes laser and photoepilation among recommended options for unwanted hair growth.
  • Because results depend on hair colour, skin type and any hormonal factors, a doctor confirms what to expect for you at your consultation.

Why choose KONCEPT® for laser hair removal

At KONCEPT®, laser hair removal is delivered as a medical treatment. It is carried out in CQC-registered premises, overseen by GMC-registered doctors, with your skin type, hair type and any medical or hormonal factors assessed before treatment begins.

What that means for your treatment

  • A GMC-registered doctor oversees your care. Your skin type, hair type and any medical or hormonal factors are assessed before treatment begins, and your plan is set on that basis.
  • A medical-grade dual-wavelength laser. The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus combines Alexandrite 755 nm and Nd:YAG 1064 nm, so we can treat fair and dark skin safely by matching the wavelength and settings to your skin type.
  • CQC-registered premises. KONCEPT® is registered with the Care Quality Commission for the regulated activities provided at our Kingston clinic.
  • A test patch before every new course. Carried out at least 48 hours before your first session so any reaction has time to show. A £50 deposit, redeemable against your first treatment.
  • Care across the clinic. If hair growth is driven by a hormonal cause such as PCOS, our GP and blood-test services are in the same building, so the underlying picture can be assessed alongside treatment.
  • One Kingston location. 46 to 48 Wood Street, KT1 1UW, a short walk from Kingston station. Open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm, and Sunday by appointment.

Areas we treat

We treat almost any area of unwanted hair on the face and body, for women and men. Below are the areas patients ask about most. Per-session prices are an entry point. Most people choose a course, where the price per session is lower. The full menu and course prices are on the laser hair removal price list.

1

Facial laser hair removal

Upper lip, chin, sides of the face, jawline and neck. Facial hair is often hormone-influenced, so it is assessed by a doctor and usually treated as a course of 8.

From £55 a session

2

Underarm laser hair removal

One of the quickest and most popular areas. A short, comfortable session.

From £70 a session

3

Bikini, Brazilian and Hollywood

From a tidy bikini line through to Brazilian and Hollywood. Sensitive-area technique with cooling for comfort.

Bikini line from £105 a session

4

Legs

Half legs or full legs. Larger areas are where a course gives the clearest value over time.

Full legs from £300 a session

5

Arms, hands and body

Full or half arms, hands and fingers, stomach line and other body areas.

From £45 a session

For thread veins, pigmentation, rosacea and leg veins, see our laser skin treatments page. This page covers hair removal only.

Safe laser hair removal for darker skin tones

Because melanin in darker skin absorbs laser energy, many older single-wavelength and IPL devices are not suitable for skin types IV to VI and carry a higher risk of burns or pigment change. The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus includes the Nd:YAG 1064 nm wavelength, which passes more safely around skin pigment and lets us treat darker skin tones effectively. A doctor confirms your Fitzpatrick skin type and runs a test patch before your first treatment.

Laser hair removal for PCOS and hirsutism

Excess facial or body hair is often linked to a hormonal cause such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or other forms of hirsutism. Laser hair removal is widely used to manage it. Because the growth is hormone-driven, it usually needs more sessions and ongoing maintenance, and the underlying cause is worth assessing. At KONCEPT® that can be done alongside our GP and blood-test services in the same clinic. Read more on our laser hair removal for PCOS and hirsutism page, or see the PCOS blood test.

Laser hair removal prices

Laser hair removal at KONCEPT® starts from £55 a session, or from £275 for a course of six. Every area and course price is shown below and on the full price list, so you can see the cost before you book.

You can pay per session, but most people choose a course, where the price per session is lower. We offer a course of 6 as standard and a course of 8 for facial areas, coarse or resistant hair, darker skin and hormone-driven hair such as PCOS, with maintenance sessions afterwards if needed.

The course of 8 is the recommended option for facial areas, coarse or resistant hair, darker skin and hormone-driven hair (PCOS), where more sessions are usually needed. The per-session price is lowest on the course of 8.

Prices are a guide. Your exact areas, the number of sessions and your price are confirmed at your consultation. See the full laser hair removal price list for every area and course option.

Fewer sessions, and why that can be better value

Laser hair removal is priced per session, so a lower headline price is not always the lower total cost. A medical-grade laser typically clears an area in fewer sessions than the IPL systems used by many high-street and salon providers, which affects both the total spend and the time you give up.

The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus is a true laser, not IPL. IPL scatters a broad band of light and is generally less selective, while a laser delivers a single, targeted wavelength. The GentleMax Pro Plus combines two: Alexandrite 755 nm for fair to medium skin, and Nd:YAG 1064 nm, which passes more safely around the pigment in darker skin, so one device treats all skin types I to VI.

Course lengths vary with the individual, the device, and the hair and skin type, so these describe typical course structures rather than a guaranteed result. In a published comparison, hair reduction after eight sessions was higher for laser than for IPL.

The value point

A course of 6 to 8 at a medical clinic can mean fewer appointments, less travel and less time off than a course of 10 to 12 elsewhere, even where the price per session is higher. You are paying for a planned course matched to your hair and skin, delivered under medical supervision.

What results to expect

Laser hair removal gives long-term hair reduction. After a full course most people see a marked and lasting reduction in hair growth, with any regrowth finer and slower. It is not a guarantee that every hair is gone for good, and results vary depending on hair colour, skin type and hormonal factors. A doctor will give you a realistic picture for your hair and skin at your consultation.

Suitability and safety

Laser hair removal works best on hair that still contains pigment, so it is less effective on white, grey, very blonde or fine red hair. It is well tolerated, and most side effects are short-lived, such as temporary redness or mild swelling around the follicles.

In a small number of people, most often with hormonal conditions, certain skin and hair types, or fine downy hair on the face and neck, laser can paradoxically stimulate finer hair rather than reduce it. This is called paradoxical hypertrichosis. A doctor-led assessment, the correct choice of wavelength and properly set energy levels are how we reduce that risk, and we explain it and obtain your consent before treatment. We do not treat during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Frequently asked questions

How much does laser hair removal cost in Kingston?

At KONCEPT®, single sessions start from about £55 for small facial areas, £70 for underarms, £105 for the bikini line and £300 for full legs. Most people choose a course, where the per-session price is lower. A course of six starts from around £275 for upper lip or chin, £350 for underarms, £525 for the bikini line and £1,500 for full legs. Your exact plan and price are confirmed at your consultation. See the laser hair removal price list for the full menu.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal gives long-term hair reduction. After a full course most people see a marked and lasting reduction in hair growth, and any hair that does return tends to be finer and slower to grow. It is not a guarantee that every hair is gone forever, and occasional maintenance sessions help keep the result. Outcomes vary between individuals and depend on hair colour, skin type and any hormonal factors.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most patients find it comfortable. The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus uses a Dynamic Cooling Device that cools the skin a fraction of a second before each pulse, which protects the surface and reduces discomfort. Many describe the sensation as a quick warm flick. Sensitive areas such as the upper lip or bikini line can feel sharper. A test patch at your first visit lets us set a comfortable, effective level for your skin.

How many sessions will I need?

Hair grows in cycles and the laser only treats follicles in their active growth phase, so a course is needed rather than a single session. Most body areas need 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Facial areas, coarse or hormone-driven hair and darker skin can need more. We recommend a course of 6 as standard and a course of 8 for the face, for coarse or resistant hair, and for PCOS or hormonal cases, with maintenance sessions afterwards if needed.

Is laser hair removal safe for dark skin?

Yes, when the right laser and settings are used. The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus combines two wavelengths, Alexandrite 755 nm and Nd:YAG 1064 nm. The Nd:YAG wavelength passes more safely around the pigment in darker skin, which makes treatment suitable across Fitzpatrick skin types I to VI. A doctor assesses your skin type and runs a test patch before your first treatment. Many older IPL devices are not suitable for darker skin.

Can I have laser hair removal for PCOS or hirsutism?

Yes. Laser hair removal is widely used to manage the excess facial and body hair seen with polycystic ovary syndrome and other causes of hirsutism. Because the hair growth is hormone-driven, it often needs more sessions and ongoing maintenance, and the underlying cause should be assessed by a doctor. At KONCEPT® this can be done alongside our GP and blood-test services. See our laser hair removal for PCOS and hirsutism page.

Are there any risks or side effects?

Laser hair removal is well tolerated. Temporary redness or mild swelling around the follicles is normal and usually settles within hours. Less common effects include temporary pigment change, particularly in darker or recently tanned skin. In a small number of people, most often with hormonal conditions, certain skin and hair types, or fine downy hair on the face and neck, laser can paradoxically stimulate finer hair (paradoxical hypertrichosis). A doctor-led assessment, correct laser choice and proper energy settings are how we reduce these risks, and we discuss them fully and obtain your consent before treatment.

Can I have laser hair removal when pregnant?

We do not offer laser hair removal during pregnancy or breastfeeding. There is no strong evidence of harm, but there is not enough safety data, and hormonal changes in pregnancy can affect hair growth and results. We are happy to plan a course for after this period.

Do you treat men?

Yes. We treat men for the back, chest, shoulders, abdomen, neckline and beard-line shaping, as well as smaller areas. Men's coarser, denser hair on the back and chest often responds well but can need a course of 8. Prices for larger male areas are on the laser hair removal price list.

Do I need a GP referral, and where is the clinic?

No referral is needed, you can book a consultation directly. KONCEPT® Medical Clinic is at 46 to 48 Wood Street, Kingston upon Thames, KT1 1UW, a short walk from Kingston station. We are CQC-registered and see patients from across Kingston, Surbiton, New Malden, Wimbledon, Richmond, Teddington and the wider Surrey area.
